چکیده

I. To determine the redox state of the mitochondrial NAD system in cirrhosis of the liver and in chronic quanti tat ive undelnutrition, the substrates of the Lglutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.2 ) and D-fl-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.3o) reactions were measured. The livers of animals fed ad l ib i tum served as controls. 2. Assuming these substrates to be in equilibrium, the NAD+/NADH ratio calculated from the substrates of the L-glutamate dehydrogenase reaction was lower in all three groups of animals than that calculated from the D-fl-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase reaction. On the other hand, the ratio

The metabolism of menadione impairs the ability of rat liver mitochondria to take up and retain calcium.

The ability of mitochondria to take up and retain Ca2+, and thereby to effect the free intracellular concentration of this ion, is well established. More recently, it has been reported (Lehninger, A. L., Vercesi, A., and Bababunmi, E. A. (1978) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 75, 1690-1696) that the redox state of pyridine nucleotides modulates mitochondrial Ca2+ balance, since the oxidation of...

Severity Assessment of Chronic Liver Disease in Children

Introduction: Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis are the most important causes of growth failure, morbidity and mortality in children. Cirrhosis consists of a variety of congenital, genetic, metabolic, and infectious causes in children. Models for predicting of chronic liver disease severity, survival, and transplantation are useful for decision-making as well as medical interventions. The mo...

Hydroperoxides can modulate the redox state of pyridine nucleotides and the calcium balance in rat liver mitochondria.

When rats are fed a selenium-deficient diet, the glutathione peroxidase activity in liver mitochondria decreases within 5 weeks to 0-6% of that of control animals fed on a diet supplemented with 0.5 ppm of selenium as sodium selenite. Analysis of the temperature dependence of energy-linked Ca(2+) uptake by means of Arrhenius plots reveals two breaks (at around 11 degrees C and 24 degrees C) in ...

Adverse Effect of T-2 Toxin and the Protective Role of Selenium and Vitamin E on Peripheral Blood B lymphocytes

Background: T-2 mycotoxin belongs to the Trichothecene family and has damaging effects on the immune system. Objective: To investigate the toxic effect of T-2 toxin on the percentage of peripheral blood B lymphocytes and the potential protective role of selenium and vitamin E. Method: Frequencies of B lymphocytes (CD19+ ) were analyzed after injection of sublethal doses of T-2 toxin into Balb/c...
